Instantly, there was a loud click as the button slid even with the wall. The block of stone immediately above it began to glow with a pale greenish light. Three squares in either direction, another block began to glow after a second of darkness. As more seconds passed the pattern repeated up and down the corridor. About twenty yards deeper in the corridor the light just ended in a deep darkness so deep it was like fine velvet. The green light reflected off of something in that darkness. It was almost like the refraction of a cat's eyes. Assuming that the creatures had two each...there was a lot of them...

Ella's laughter turned to an angry growl instantly.

"FOOD!"

The darkness began rushing up the corridor towards the group.

Tears began to leak out of the pale girl's eyes, rolling down her cheeks. Like a mantra, the phrase 'help me' was chanted in her mind.



Iryna took a risk. A dark aura formed around her. Speed was needed...even if it came from darkness.

The darkness shivered against the commanding voice. It paused briefly before pulsing with darkness as if to answer the aura gathering around the gypsy. There was a cry of pain...one single cry of pain...as Furor's fire hit it.

Taking aim where Furor launched his fireball at, Seren curls his tails forming a small fire whisp. Seeing Korin running into the shadows attacking them, 'Seems everyone is dealing well up front but a little extra never hurts.' As he lifts up the tails releasing the fireball where Furor's went, 'Since there seemed to be something there, from the one cry... give it one more good hit.'

'The mountain is strong; the mountain is strong,' chanted Ella against the darkness that grew through her mind and soul. 'THE MOUNTAIN IS STRONG!' With those words, she lashed out like she had so many times against the Darkness that was with her in the caved-in mine for so many months.



"Well, if we can't play it smart, let's at least die a good death!" With those words, the dark gypsy charged down the hall to the inky cloud of darkess, her blades glinting in Eria's light even as Iryna left the safety of said light.

The darkness down the hall hesitated, but the attacks upon it urged retaliation. How dare the food attack them? Harm them? No matter what the friend food said, stopping was no longer an option. Even the friendly food was attacking! Devour!

"All things shall be rendered unto ash..." as all his tails flared up with a spark and ignited with a red flame, " This will erase you from my sight." 'I wonder what it will feel like to be eaten...' Master wondered as if it were only an idle thought. Kuro could then feel him grin and then Master spoke in a parody of a child singing, 'Let's find out!'

With jerky motions, Kuro began to move forward towards the darkness, fighting for control the entire way. Just whenever he thought he had the former overlord beat, Master would surge up and move another foot forward. While the pheonix remained standing, he gave every appearance of having a seizure or fit of some kind.

Furor noticed the odd movements of Kuro from the corner of his eye. "Kuro? you ok?" the boy asked though not before gathering up his strength once more to send more flames at the darkness that was trying to claim them.

"The mountain is strong!" The pale girl shakily pushes herself up the wall after her shout. Her eyes, still wide from her fear, focus on the darkness that is inching itself closer even as her friends are fighting it. Her eyes flash a pure white as she strikes out against the Shadows once more.



"WAAAAAAZAAAM!"

The gypsy was a whirlwind of sharp blades. She felt a tug on her limbs when the shadows sought to control her, but it didn't slow her appreciably. Even the rushing tide of water didn't faze her.

Then the darkness reared back and with a roar flooded through the area purified by Eria's aura. Like a black wave crashing upon a sandy shore, the dark energy of the shadows rushed upon them, knocking them backwards and leaving them breathless. Then another force rippled through the air. The world spun like a gyroscope for a moment before righting itself once more.

Stunned, Eria fell to the floor, her light slowly fading. Ella staggered against the wall to which she was clinging. Her eyes, once more their cornflower blue, turned to Abby.

"Everything...everything is different..."

Abby looks around carefully "I think that was the last of them" Abby says Dusting off her hat and then putting it back on. "Everyone ok?"

The stout warrior righted himself to his feet quickly after being knocked unceremoniously on his rump, and looked around. noting the absence of the mass of shadow his mind quickly came to one conclusion. 'Shoulda known a group that big would have stronger death throws than normal.' he thought absently as he sheathed his swords and dusted off his person before standing proper and turning to the assembled group. "E'eryone a'righ'?"

Furor righted himself as he looked about at his friends, "Everyone ok?" he asked, "Where is Kuro?" he said as he couldn't help but not that something seemed vastly different. Moving forward some the darkness seemed to cling to him like a cloak over his shoulders, while a threatening, and chilled air seemed to pour from his body. "Wh...what was that.. did the darkness do something to us?" he asked still trying to get a feel for his own body once again.

'Oh nothing really has changed....' came a soft voice in the back of Furor's mind, 'It is more like that we have been freed. No longer bound to be hidden away by some arcane force...' the voice told him, 'course you know me... too even if we haven't gotten to truly talk before..'

Furor's mind whirled at the feeling of another voice echoing within his mind. He was used to being alone, save for his cat, yet this voice was telling him that he knew him. "Tumult..." came the boys soft whisper now as he suddenly came crashing to the floor hitting the stone rather hard. Though the sensation never registered to him as his mind began to reel. 'But I thought I made you up... so I wouldn't feel so alone... so I could have someone to play with besides the skeletons...' the boy said now thinking the very words within his mind.

'I have always been watching over you brother... while I may have been blocking from being able to speak to you before now... I have always watched over my little brother...' Tumult said, and Furor could feel the smirk that lined his brothers face.

"The relative term is 'safe', I believe," came Ella's brief and emotionless reply. She struggled to raise to her feet once more. Then she shoved against the wall and stumbled forward, only to fall to her knees once more. Her slim hands cradled the clear orb that no longer glowed in her hands. The sickly green light of the stones set into the wall tinted the image, but they were the only source of light now that the Jarolyn did not provide her aura. "Eria?"



"Seren is missing as well," Iryna noted as she rejoined the group. The daggers she still held in her hands disappeared with a couple of flicks of her wrists. The motion was too quick to note. "Korin, do you feel any different? I have a feeling that something changed beyond death throes..."

Abby walks slowly over to Ella and helped her get to her feet and make sure she was steady on them. "I'm not sure last I saw of kuro was him having that freak out near the mass of shadows and getting closer. As for Seren he must be close by right?" Abby asked looking at the rest of the group.

"Aside from feelin' a bit lighter than I did a bit ago," he said bouncing slightly on the balls of his feet as he looked himself and his gear over. "I don't really feel any different."

"As fer th' fox and Kuro," he stilled and looked grimly at the place the shadow mass once occupied "While I don' know how those things interact with a pheonix..." he trailed off absently, looking at nothing seemingly lost to what ever was playing through his mind.

Furor pondered this a bit, "This is all so strange, puppy is missing, bird is missing... we are losing our animals!" he said in fright, "Wait... where is my kitty?" the boy said as he stood up and began to move about in a frantic manner looking for his skeleton cat. As he moved near each of his friends the sense of panic, and chill brushed over their bodies.

"He should be in your sack," Iryna said. Then she blinked and looked over the boy again. Something within her reacted to the aura the kid now exluded. He felt similar to her brother--not Ryszard. Her older brother, the one that she hardly thought about except when he was brought up by her father. Damian had the same chilling feel to him. But she would have notice if the kid had had the aura before ...shouldn't she?



Ella allowed her sister to raise her to her feet though she did not release her grip on Eria's lifeless and cooling form. She turned toward Korin.

"She's broken," she said, her voice thick with unshed tears. "What's wrong with her?"

Korin shook himself from his haunted revere and turned to face the young woman holding the gem that was Eria, he held out his hand in request for the orb tearfully handed him the construct. for the instant the Star first touched his fingers the glow returned only to be snuffed again an instant later. gingerly holding up the now seemingly fragilest of things he examined it for damage, seeing nothing but the pristine water-clear crystal he shrugged. "I don' know lass, but I think it best we seek out the only ones who may as soon as possible."

Abby nodded at Korin's words "Lets get back to the main part of the order house. Once there we can try to figure out what all happend and what may have changed" Abby stated looking at the group.

The boy gave a cry of glee as he found his cat, "One animal safe.." he said happily while he could hear his brother laughing within his mind. 'Sure you laugh but could you imagine life without the furless one?' he asked of Tumult. A simple no of replay came back as the boy cradled the cat to him.

Walking over to Ella Furor offered up his cat to her, "He makes me feel better when I am sad..." he said to her resting his head slightly upon her arm.

Ella just shook her and didn't reach out to take the skeleton cat from his human companion. Her eyes looked at him and through him. The cornflower color was still slightly darkened from her ordeal, lending a depth to her gaze that she did not usually have. That gaze weighed him in some way the boy could not explain.

"You're different, too," she told him matter of factually. She didn't seem as afraid of him any more, but everyone could see the goosebumps pimpling her bare arms. "And you have a friend."

Then she stepped sideways around him and concatenated her left arm with her sister's right. Then with more force than one would imagine that she had, she led the march up the hall. Korin quickly caught up with the Rimons and took over leading, Eria's inert form cradled in one hand. Iryna waited for Furor to follow, taking up the rear guard without thinking.






Far away, over mountains, across sand, and over more mountains, a pair of hazel-green eyes snapped open and glowed a soft green light. The woman, a Mother, shook her head ruefully at the words that her God whispered to her and shivered with remembered pain and fear. She had heard the laughter of the demoness echoing across the land once more. The last time had been the Time of Burning. It did not bode well for the future of Austra that she was heard again.

"Darkness comes," she warned the empty room. There was none to answer her and the words echoed off the tapestries on the walls as if they were bare stone. She seemed weary in her loneliness, as if a great weight pressed upon her slim shoulders. "Darkness comes."
