02 Journey (Southan Alternative View)

Korin felt himself lifted within the magic. He had the briefest glimpse of a pale brunette weaving at a loom and a sensation of being tangled in millions of strings before being overcome with light.

Then he was falling.

He had an impression of bluish-gray stone sprinting by him. It was punctured in places by rich greens and bright gold. In addition to the wind of him rushing towards the ground like a child towards sweets, another breeze hit him at an angle. The air, when he managed to drag some into his lungs, was not the smoggy atmosphere of Phoenix City. It was almost like the crisp mountain air of Dvergheim.

'Opps...' came the mysterious feminine voice. With a sudden jerk, the fall stopped, leaving the dwarf hanging by one hand onto the Star. His feet dangled several feet above the stone covered ground. In front of him there seemed to be a stone ledge jutting from the cliff face.

Dangling from the Star, he tried to take a moment to get his bearings, looking around he managed to note that he was in the ruins of a moderately sized keep.

"Where in Midgard am I?" he managed to get out before realizing that his shoulder had wrenched by the brief fall and sudden stop mid-air and the strength in that arm failed him.

The ground was rushing up to meet Korin far more quickly than he would have liked. He had to do something to try and break the fall. Twenty feet had never seemed so short a distance before now.

He had no real experience with uncontrolled falls, as such he did what he could to make sure he landed on his feet... and for the most part was successful, he'd landed on his feet then twisted one ankle and jammed the other knee, not to mention the piece of what was most likely at one point a rafter buried in his thigh.

Slowly and stoically, he managed to extricate himself from the heap he'd fallen into to address his injuries. "Nothin' serious, just me pride." He huffed and proceeded to pull from his first teachings. Pulling the power of the earth beneath his feet into himself to heal his wounds, he removed the offending piece of wood from his leg. Pain flared as the healing took place, his shoulder pulled itself back into the right position, the damage to the ligaments in his knee and ankle mended, and the open hole in his leg grew closed.

As the pain subsided, he took a quick look around, scanning for threats.

As he had seen from the air, he was in the middle of what once might have been an impressive castle. Time, however, had not been kind to it. Most of the outside walls had crumbled, leaving piles of rubble taller than he was in places. There were a couple of openings--they must have been hallways--that lead into the face of the mountain before him. The forest, full of tough and familiar trees, was beginning to take the land back over.

The Star hung in the air above him, slowly turning. Then it streaked into the upper opening, disappearing into the mountain. Just when he was starting to debate whether or not he should try to follow, it reappeared in the opening right in front of him. In the shadows, it gave off a dim glow that almost looked sad.

'How long ago was the Great Battle against Trovin the Terrible?'

The same voice from before echoed in his mind as the little sphere floated closer. It began to circle him like his old master had sometimes done during their lessons.

"Roughly five 'undred years." he spat out before realizing that no one had asked the question. A puzzled expression flowed over the dwarf’s features as he examined the 'forlorn' blue sphere floating in front of him.

The Star paused behind him. He could feel the magic that imbued it pulsing like a silent heartbeat. The wind picked up again, scattering pine needles and leaves over the stones of the fallen keep.

'So long...no wonder the keep is crumbled.’

Then the sphere circled back around to in front of him. In the fading sunlight, the glow was almost undetectable.

'What is your name, sir dwarf?'

"My name is Korin," he said with a hint confusion. "None of the legends mention anything about the Star being intelligent or self-aware," the stout soldier mulled. "Do you have a name?"

'A name? I have many of those: the Jewel of Neki-Seraph, the Star of Dvergheim...'



A pale almost ghostly figure formed around the orb. She shimmered for a moment before solidifying. She was tall like a human with pointed ears similar to an elf, only not as large. When she opened her eyes, they were the exact same color as her glow.

"My father called me 'Eria'," she said, her voice so closely like the mental echo that he had been hearing. "Eria Jarolyn."

"Well that's far be'er than just calling ye 'Star' idnit." he said snapping out of his reverie "Ye seem te know where we are, so would you happen to know where a spot of civilization might be?"

"The closest city to Father's keep was the Dwarven city of Ogouri..." She trailed off, looking around the ruins of the keep again. "But so much time has passed..."

In a flash of light, she turned back into the orb and shot into the air. In barely half a heartbeat, she had disappeared into the clouds. Then she was falling back down towards him, a faintly glowing blur against the darkening sky.

'There's a keep nearby full of magic users. I'd say about half an hour from here.'

All was calm at Mitaji House. The repairs of the last goblin raid were coming along nicely. As dusk crept upon the mountain fortress, the keep was settling into its nighttime serenity. The bells rang for the evening meal. A few young acolytes rushed by Kuro Fenikkusu on their way there.



"Hey, birdbrain," called the only other nonmember student of the Order House. Unlike him, Iryna Kemoni had no interest in learning to save people's souls and mind. She was only doing community service for having the gall to kill an Order member. "Father Donatello told me to make sure that you made it to dinner. Something about you skiving out on lunch?"

He gave her a slight disgruntled look.

"I see, well, in that case is it ready?" he said in a monotone. He was trying to ignore two things, one being the way she pushed his buttons and two being the distasteful pecking at the back of his head. It was a loud yelling that he always had to push back, the voice that once ruled this body. He put down what he was working on and stood up ready to go. Even if dinner was not ready he needed to get away for a bit. At least long enough to make the voice shut up. He started to float lightly off the ground and waited to find out if dinner was done.

"Of course it's ready. Didn't you hear the bells? I bet half the valley must have--damn annoying things."

Iryna reached out and snagged his sleeve. By sheer effort, she began to drag his floating body towards the dinning hall. Her determination must have been why Father Donatello chose her to be his messenger. As annoying as he found the hotheaded little gypsy to be at times, he did have to give her that she usually got the job done.

He tried to push away from her. It's not like he didn't want to go, but it was so demeaning to be dragged. However his efforts were in vain for he lacked the physical strength to take control of this and get free. ’I could get her to let go,’ said the voice in the back of his head. Kuro yelled very loudly, "NO!"

Iryna immediately dropped her grip on Kuro's sleeve. She crossed her arms in front of her chest and looked at him with her dark eyes. Her lips pursed slightly before turning down into a frown.

"You're acting weird again, birdbrain," she announced after a moment of brooding silence.

He jerked his head down and then looked back up at her. "Sorry, I didn't mean to yell," he said in a low apologetic voice, "I will come to dinner, please lead the way."

The pair had not taken five steps towards the dinning hall when someone in the bell tower was frantically ringing the little bell. Its frantic peals sounded over the keep, announcing approaching doom. Like the sound at the base of their hearing, the pounding footfalls of charging goblins grew into a low roar.

The masters and journeymen of the Order of Ozain began to fill up the courtyard. Some scrabbled to positions along the high stone walls of the keep. Others braced the gates of the keep and the repairs.

As before, the goblins reeked of foul energy. It had long been thought that the goblins were being controlled by some evil overlord, but searches of the surrounding area had turned up no hiding place. Even the villages of the dark horde had not been found.

On the ledge overlooking the keep, a dwarf and an orb watched the offending creatures approached. Korin recognized them as goblins, even from this distance. But even the half starved ones that he had just fought in Dule's arena had looked better taken care of.

"Goblins..." he said with disdain and wrinkled up his nose "And somethin' smells off about 'em, even from here."

"Might as well help 'em out, eh?" he said turning to Eria, his skin taking on the color and texture of the rock beneath them "C'mon, we got Pests to deal with!" With that, he reached out and grabbed the orb from where she was floating and sank into the rock without a trace.

Eria let out a little burst of light as she disappeared into the stone. 'Eep!'

Ellenora Rimon (or Ella as she insisted on being called, much to her mother's dismay) was dancing down the dirt road that lead through the mountains to the Mitaji valley. They, or rather her sister, hoped for help dealing with Ella's fractured mind. Three months alone in an abandoned and collasped mine had left the girl with some issues. She hadn't been the same since. Which was part of the reason that she was dancing in the middle of nowhere to music that no one else could hear.

"Isn't it beautiful, Abs?" she called back to her sister. Her pale hair streamed out from her head as she spun in place. Her light blue eyes reflected the gentle sunlight that flitered through the trees to act as a spotlight for her performance. "Doesn't it just make you want to dance?"

Abagil ( though she insisted on Abby) smiled slightly and adjusted her hat. "it is Ella but I don't think it's my tune" she replyed wondering ounce agian what exactly went on in her sisters mind.

"Bells toll," Ella said suddenly. She stopped dancing. Slowly, her head fell to one side, listening. Then she darted to one side and began to climb a huge oak tree. She quickly disappeared into its branches. Ella disappearing was never a good thing.

“Ella.....” Abby called after “Ella what is it?”

Abby looked up after her sister climbing up the tree. While straining her ears for what attracted her sisters attention.

"The clapper strikes the side, resulting in a tone," came her sister's voice from somewhere above. "The tone is frantic--running, always running--they scream but no one hears..."

“Ahead or behind?” Abby asked, her eyes darting up and down the road back now to the tree.

Her eyes quickly picking shadow after shadow near by thinking about how to fight near by threat.

"Ahead and behind are just directions. They don't matter."

The kitsunemimi dropped out of the tree in front of her sister. One hand and knee touch the ground in addition of her tiny feet. She looks up at Abby, her cornflower eyes sparking. A wind blew from behind her, tossling her white blond hair. Even to Abby's more human nose, there was a foul smell to it, like meat gone rancid.

"To the side is also a direction though and it's that way we must go."

Abby rolled her eyes slightly at her sister’s dissection of directions.

“To the side then, did you at least see what is giving off the stench? It’s worse then the bar on chili night” Abby replied keeping closer to her sister.

"Brutal trogs with tainted souls," came the cryptic answer. In one graceful movement, Ella stood to her full (but still lacking) height. "They've played with darkness and lost their way. The soul goes out like a flame."

"Trogs?" Abby’s eyes went up slightly. "Well, we did promise Da that we’d keep in shape, and that promises to be a workout." Abby paused for a moment thinking about what her sister said.

"Are we heading toward or away from these flickering souls? Because running is good exercise too," Abby commented while readying herself for either of the two choices her sister would lead her into.

Ella lead the way over the hill on the road. The valley spilled out in front of the pair as the trees and stone that had surrounded them fell away. Below them, they could see the massive keep that had to be the Mitaji House for the Order of Ozain. It was truly a masterpiece of dwarven construction. Its sturdy walls stood about seven feet high and were at least that much thick. They also had goblins pounding on them.

"Goblins, trogs, raving mad,
"Waving sticks that are bad..."

After spouting her bit of poetry, Ella looked at Abby and asked politely, "Will you dance with me?"

The pair rushed into the melee from behind the mass of goblins laying seige to the well-armed fortress. Up above, archers took to the walls and began firing into the crowd.

Kuro drew his bow after landing on the wall surrounding the Order House and took aim at the closest goblin.

Traveling as swiftly through the ground as one would fly above it, Korin finds the now battlefield with ease. "This is going to be easy." he thinks as he singles out a goblin at the back of the group and without warning, seamlessly bursts from the soil behind the creature and swinging his greatsword to cleave the beast down the middle.

Goblins fell as arrows hit them. They also died from being split in half like a log or other gruesome ways. One near the back let out a brief yelp as a wave of magically conjured water engulfed him. Try as he might, he couldn't escape the bubble of magic.



"WOOOOOOOT!"

With that scream of pleasure, the wild gypsy threw herself from the wall to land among the action. Out of nowhere she pulled out two matching silver daggers. She spared a moment to kiss one before she began mincing her way through the army of goblins. Iryna disappeared in the mass of bodies. She called back to Kuro:

"NOW THIS IS THE PERFECT APPETIZER, BIRDBRAIN! HELL, YEAH!"



Moving almost as if she were dancing, Ella wove her way into the crowd as well. She closed her eyes and swayed to music that once again, only she could hear. On a silent beat, she struck her foot out, striking a goblin in the head with her boot. Then she swirled and began to stab everything within reach. Through a unconscious effect, Ella was still close to her sister. The other woman was carefully out of range for the kitsunemimi's attacks however.

The body of the goblin pierced by an arrow with Kuro's fletching twitched as another arrow slammed into its dying body. The goblin that had so foolishly thought to attack the dwarf that had exploded from the earth below turned into nothing more than a spray of blood and guts to coat his allies. A nearby goblin must have blinked because next second, the dwarven greatsword was entering his gut.

Another crazed yell sounded through the clamor as the Kemoni heir made her presence felt some more. Ella Rimon danced her way toward the gypsy. The two meet somewhere near the blood-soaked dwarf with his glittering orb...which was also covered in the foul-smelling liquid. In fact, the two blade-dancers weren't entirely clean anymore themselves.

The whole bloody thing ended the same as it did every time the army approached the keep. When night's shadows reached the goblin hoard it eveloped them. Not even the corpses were left to rot. The creatures disappeared off of blades and out of hands. The ground was littered with blood and arrows, but any other traces of the goblins were completely gone.

then kuro jumps down flying the last bit and waits for the answer.

"I can' speak as t' these two" he spokes thickly whilst slinging the ichor from his blade and walked forward, "but I'd be more 'an 'appy t' take some food off yer 'ands, sience yer offerin'."
