Starting Out (Basic Character Gen)

Each character has thirty character points as their basic package. These points may be spent in any configuration among the six Attributes. The only requirement is your Endurance score may not be less than 1. Without an Endurance score, you have no form whatsoever and therefore do not exist. Even spirits have a form. [For more on Attributes, see Attributes and Related Explanations.]

For every two points you have in an Attribute, you gain an ability slot. Ability slots are used to purchase abilities from the Categories assigned to that Attribute. [For more on ability categories and what attribute they are assigned to, see the above link].

Destiny of Birth (Races)

Races are a fundamental part of a character. Literally, every character has one. Each race gains certain benefits from being a member of that race in the very mechanical terms of extra character points and in some cases, access to specific abilities. The other end of that benefit is the character points which come from those preselected weaknesses must be spent picking up certain abilities as specified in that race’s preselected abilities list. The entirety of a race’s racial package must be taken at first level.

Certain races contain subraces, which share the same racial identity and the majority of the basic racial package, but may have a few small changes. Subraces are always listed in parentheses after the race they augment.

Likewise, there is a racial type called Secondary. These races may be taken with other races, but only if the total sum of the character points earned from racial weaknesses is twenty-one or less. To help you out, a section of each race’s entry called Attribute Adjustments totals all the points from the race’s preselected weaknesses. Races whose racial weaknesses would add up to more than twenty-one points or who have the exact same preselected weakness cannot be combined. Secondary races are listed first and in alphabetical order.

[For more on Races, see Races (By Name).]

In This Weakness, I Find Strength (Weaknesses)

Weaknesses make a character weaker in some way, either by making them vulnerable or at a disadvantage. In return, they grant additional character points that may be spent in any Attribute. You may only gain twenty-one character points from any one source (sources being voluntary, racial, or story). First level is the usual time to gain these points, but weaknesses may be gained any time a character levels.

[For more on using weaknesses, see Weaknesses]

Path to Power (Ability Paths)

Ability paths are an easy method of organizing where you spend your ability slots. They are grouped together by what the ideal of that archetype would have and grant a bonus of some variety for completing them, which in turn helps your character be the best that he can. Your character can have as many ability paths as you want (and can afford) and can work on several of them at the same time. Abilities taken at the same level are automatically assumed to have been taken in the correct order for any ability path you are working on unless you are working on two (or more) whose orders conflict.

To this end, abilities should be placed on the character sheet in the order that they were gained, though still in their appropriate subsections. This will allow the Storyteller to easily verify that a character has completed a path. This also allows for easy recognition of what abilities were lost should the character be affected by an ability that would remove abilities or ability slots.

[For more on Ability Paths, see Ability Paths.]

Growth of Power (Leveling)

As a character moves through the story, he gains experience points. For every three thousand of these points he gathers, he goes up in power by one level and thus gains five additional character points to spend. Certain races may gain more additional character points. These character points may be spent any way the player sees fit, but must be placed in an Attribute prior to furthering play, usually the next game session. Likewise, a player must spend any ability slot he wishes to this level at this time. If he chooses to save ability slots, he may, but cannot spend any ability slot thus left open until the next time he levels. Saved slots should be noted on the character’s leveling history.

Additionally, a character’s hit points are recalculated based on his Endurance score. Unless otherwise specified, this is the only time that the hit point total is calculated. Abilities that temporarily boost or damage a character’s Endurance score do not automatically affect the character’s hit point total. [For more on hit points, see Hit Points, Damage, and Healing.]
