0.5 Of Dreams and Nightmares (Haven Saga)

Jean suddenly found herself in the ruins of a village amidst the sands. Before her, only thirty feet away, was an armored foe. The tension was high as she could feel the threatening aura of the person before her.

Jean starts at the feel of sand under Her feet her eyes darting around for signs of her family as she mutters, "damn. Da was right about a family curse. Live in interesting times indeed."

Tumult shuddered as he looked about at his surroundings. "Now where has the dark lands taken us to brother..." he muttered, his eyes gleaming as he looked about. "This place makes me feel empty... like I have never felt before..." Tumult began to panic slightly now though as he could not sense his brothers mind, feel the other half of himself. "Brother...." he whispered in panic now Scythe coming to hand. "Someone has taken you from me... and they shall pay for that."

The dark sands shifted between the feet of the two warriors as a might wind whipped through the destroyed village. Echoing over the dunes came laughter, but it was far enough away that it might have been a coyote or desert wolf.

Tumult looked before him at the person standing there. "Did you do it? Did you take my brother from me?" the boy's aura stormed about him. Darkness clung to him like a cloak, a chill filled the very air as he closed in the gap, and a tremor of fear seemed to ripple off of him. Now standing before his enemy he raised his Scythe to attack.

The blows hit her body and Jean was treated to the unsettling sight of her own blood spraying from her body before the darkness edging her vision grew to fill it. As the darkness swallowed her, Jean was reminded forcibly of the stories that her Aunt told her of the Hungry Shadows. Indeed, it felt as if her entire being was being eaten in tiny chunks. She couldn't scream. It was too much for any soul to bear.

'Night wrapped in day wrapped in night...Night wrapped in day wrapped in night. The colors are there! Scattered--scattered everywhere!'

It was Ella's voice. Jean recognized it. And it was as if someone turned on a light. The darkness was gone and Jean was safe in her own bed. She did a quick inventory. There was no signs of her wounds, either those from the stranger's scythe or the missing chunks. Relief filled her like the sunshine filtering in through her window.

'Just a dream,' she thought. 'Just a dream.''

She couldn't have known that across the mountains that bordered Lithia and on the other side of the desert dunes, in the Mitaji mountains, another being was stirring into life. His emotions were far more turbulent, just as his name would suggest. The boundary separating him from his brother was gone. For the first time that fateful night of his creation, he conversed with his brother. Time would tell if he forgot the stranger with the orange eyes.
