Defense Equipment
Defense Equipment are abilities that focus on putting something physically in between a character and danger. These abilities augment a character’s Defense rolls and therefore oppose Attack rolls and in rare cases, Magic. In order to gain Defense Equipment, a character needs two points per ability in Defense.

BONE ARMOR
Description: Through a painful ritual, you have had bone fragments grafted onto your flesh. Although it occurs at the expense of your health, this tough new shell protects you from getting harmed in the first place.
Mechanic: You may subtract a number not to exceed 3 from your Endurance score. The bonus to Defense is equal to twice the penalty subtracted from Endurance. Once chosen, this number may not be reversed. This ability may be combined with any ability of the Armor subcategory. You may take this ability multiple times, but only every five levels. The bonuses gained stack. This ability cannot be removed by the ability Pick Pocket. Using this ability is automatic.

DRAGON SCALE ARMOR
Description: You can wear armor made from the hide of a dragon. This armor is very light and flexible and carries a trace of the magical resistance of the creature whose hide it is made from.
Mechanic: You gain +1 bonus on Defense and Resistance rolls. This ability may not be combined with any other ability of the Armor subcategory unless specified by that ability’s mechanic. Using this ability is automatic.

HEAVY ARMOR
Description: You are a walking tank. You may lose a little attack power due to your bulky armor, but feel it is worth it for the impressive armor bonus you gain.
Mechanic: You gain +6 bonus on Defense rolls. This ability imposes -4 on all Attack and Magic rolls. This ability may not be combined with any other ability of the Armor subcategory unless specified by that ability’s mechanic. Using this ability is automatic.

HIDE ARMOR
Description: You can wear hide armor. Hide armor, made from animal skins, isn’t as heavy as some types of armor, but does impose minor restriction in movement.
Mechanic: You gain +3 bonus on Defense rolls against physical attacks. This ability imposes -1 on all Attack and Magic rolls. This ability may not be combined with any other ability of the Armor subcategory unless specified by that ability’s mechanic. Using this ability is automatic.

LIGHT ARMOR
Description: You can wear light armor. Light armor favors finesse over toughness, granting a smaller bonus but letting you move easier.
Mechanic: You gain +2 bonus on Defense rolls. This ability may not be combined with any other ability of the Armor subcategory unless specified by that ability’s mechanic. Using this ability is automatic.

MEDIUM ARMOR
Description: You can wear medium armor. Medium armor, as its name suggests, is a healthy balance between speed and toughness.
Mechanic: You gain +4 bonus on Defense rolls against physical attacks. This ability imposes -2 on all Attack and Magic rolls. This ability may not be combined with any other ability of the Armor subcategory unless specified by that ability’s mechanic. Using this ability is automatic.

REINFORCED CLOTHING
Description: Your clothing is tougher than normal, affording you greater protection.
Mechanic: You gain +1 bonus to Defense rolls against Physical Attacks. If an opponent receives a die result of 20 for their Attack roll against you, this ability becomes useless until your clothing is repaired in game. This ability may be combined with any ability of the Armor subcategory. This ability may be gained multiple times. Its effect stacks. Using this ability is automatic.

SHIELD
Description: You can use a shield to aid in your defense.
Mechanic: You gain +1 bonus to Defense rolls. This ability may be combined with any Weapon-Based ability as long as the user is not using two weapons at once or attacking while using the ability Two-Handed Strike. This ability may be combined with any ability of the Armor subcategory. Using this ability is automatic.

SPRING ARMOR
Description: You can wear spring armor. Unlike most armor, spring armor was crafted, not to reinforce the wearer against damage, but increase their agility, allowing a wearer to potentially strike first.
Mechanic: You gain +0 bonus on Defense rolls with this ability. Because of its agility-enhancing properties, spring armor grants a +1 bonus on Attack and Magic rolls. This ability may be used with any ability of the Armor subcategory. Using this ability is automatic.

TOWER SHIELD
Description: Your heavy shield is an excellent defense, but restricts movement.
Mechanic: You gain +4 bonus to Defense rolls. Because of its weight and bulk, a tower shield imposes a -2 penalty on Attack and Magic unless you have completed the Blackguard, Knight, or Paladin ability path. Completing any one of the three listed paths reduces your penalty by one. This effect does not stack. This ability may be combined with any ability of the Armor subcategory. Using this ability is automatic.
